1. 不要稱呼黑人為 “Negro”
“Negro”是英語“黑人”的意思，尤指從非洲販賣到美國(guó)為奴的黑人。所以在美國(guó)千萬不要把黑人稱作“Negro”，跟白人交談如此，跟黑人交談更如此。否則，黑人會(huì)感到你對(duì)他的蔑視。說到黑人，最好用“Black”一詞，黑人對(duì)這個(gè)稱呼會(huì)坦然接受。
2. 不能隨便說 “I am sorry”
“I am sorry” 和 “Excuse me” 都是“抱歉、對(duì)不起” 的意思，但 “I am sorry” 語氣較重，表示承認(rèn)自己有過失或錯(cuò)誤。如果為了客氣而輕易出口，常會(huì)被對(duì)方抓住把柄，追究實(shí)際不屬于你的責(zé)任。到時(shí)只有“啞巴吃黃連”，因?yàn)橐痪洹皩?duì)不起”已承認(rèn)自己有錯(cuò)，又如何改口呢？
3. 謙虛（modest）并非美德（virtue）
中國(guó)人視謙虛為美德。但是美國(guó)人卻把過謙視為虛偽（deceptive）的代名詞。如果一個(gè)能操流利英語的人自謙說英語講得不好，接著又說出一口流暢的英語，美國(guó)人便會(huì)認(rèn)為他撒了謊，是個(gè)口是心非、裝腔作勢(shì)的人。所以，同美國(guó)人交往，應(yīng)該大膽說出自己的能力，有一是一，有十是十，不必謙虛客氣，否則反而事與愿違。

Christmas is the most important festival in the western world. It falls on December 25th. When my mother and I stayed in America, we were invited by one of my mother's friends to have Christmas with an American family. We bought some presents for our American friends on our way to their house.
