The White House says Osama bin Laden was not armed when a Navy SEAL raiding party confronted him. It also acknowledges that bin Laden did not himself have a weapon, but confirms he resisted capture during the raid.

The US White House Press Secretary says bin Laden was shot in the head, and in the chest during the encounter.

Jay Carney, White House press Secretary, said, "In the room with bin Laden a woman, bin Laden's wife rushed the US assaulter and was shot in the leg but not killed. Bin Laden was then shot and killed."

Carney also read from a prepared statement drafted by the Pentagon. It describes the treatment of bin Laden's dead body. He says the burial of bin Laden was done in conformance with Islamic precepts and practices, aboard the USS Carl Vinson.

Jay Carney said, "A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, and the deceased's body eased into the sea."

The White House also says investigators are looking through a treasure trove of items seized in the raid, that might provide details on al-Qaida's operations.

Jay Carney said, "First of all and most importantly, in any case, is any evidence of planned attacks. Second, would be information that could lead to other high value targets or other networks that exist that maybe we don't know about or that we only know a little bit about. And third and more broadly, on the al-Qaida network, itself."

Carney says the death of bin Laden won't affect plans to begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan this summer. He also says the White House is considering whether to release photographs of Osama bin Laden taken after he was killed, but administration officials are concerned the images are too gruesome to share. Carney hasn't said when officials will make a decision.
