December 29, 1940 - The worst air raid in Britain's history.

Between September of 1940 and June 1941, Nazi Luftwaffe bombers did their best to bomb civilian London into submission. On the evening of December 29, 1940, London endured its most devastating air raid. Approximately 1,500 fires broke out. The city had been largely evacuated, but those who remained helped to contain London's worst fire since the great fire of 1666. The flames were finally subdued, but the blitz continued. Without question, the ability of Londoners to maintain their composure had much to do with their survival. As Edward R. Murrow reported: Not once have I heard a man, woman or child suggest that Britain should throw in her hand.?
