When the word “shift”is used as a verb, it means to move or to change. It’s also a word popularly used when changing from one gear to another on a car or on a bike.

We shifted some money from one bank account to another.
我們從一個(gè)銀行賬戶中轉(zhuǎn)移了一些錢(qián)到另一個(gè)。

David always shifts his car into a lower gear when he climbs this steep road.
大衛(wèi)常常在陡峭的路上換抵擋。

I shift gears a lot while riding my bike.
我在騎車(chē)的時(shí)候常常換擋。

We need to shift some weight in the truck so that it’s more evenly distributed.
我們需要改變一下卡車(chē)的重量使得其分布更均勻。

When used as a noun, “shift” means change or move, but it’s also used for an amount of time at work. Some companies and organizations operate 24 hours a day, which is divided into three equal shifts: the day shift, the afternoon shift, and the night shift.
“shift”用作名詞時(shí),意思仍然是“改變”或“移動(dòng)”,但是也表示“輪班”。某些公司或組織一天24小時(shí)都在運(yùn)作,因而一天被分為三個(gè)輪班:日班、下午班和夜班。

Jan works the second shift from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
簡(jiǎn)上下午班——從下午三點(diǎn)到晚上十一點(diǎn)。

Sometimes her husband works the overnight shift from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
有時(shí)候她丈夫上夜班——從晚上十一點(diǎn)到第二天早上七點(diǎn)。

Most workers prefer the day shift from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
大多數(shù)工人更喜歡上日班——從早上七點(diǎn)到下午三點(diǎn)。
