Person of the Year: Barack Obama, Architect of the New America
President Barack Obama has been named Time's Person of the Year.
Managing Richard Stengel unveiled the magazine's choice on Wednesday's "Today." He said it was remarkable that the president won two terms with over 50 percent of the popular vote as a Democrat. He also noted that Obama took office in an economic crisis, and credited him with creating a new political "
alignment like Ronald Reagan did forty years ago."
He will take the oath on Jan. 20 as the first Democrat in more than 75 years to get a majority of the popular vote twice. Only five other Presidents have done that in all of U.S. history.
There are many reasons for this, but the biggest by far are the nation’s changing
demographics and Obama’s unique ability to capitalize on them. When his name is on the ballot, the next America — a younger, more diverse America — turns out at the polls.
Time's Person of the Year is an annual tradition. Last year, the magazine chose "the protestor" in recognition of demonstrations all over the world, including Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street and the anarchists in Greece.
