Beating the odds
Wilma Rudolph was born into a poor family with 22 children. Life for the Rudolphs was not easy. As a black family, the Rudolphs faced discrimination in education and health care. Wilma was often sick, and when she was four years old, one leg stopped working.

Doctors said she had polio and would never walk again. But her family couldn't give up. They took care of her, and Wilma slowly got better. By age eight, she could walk with a leg brace. At 13, she was the star of her school basketball team.

Wilma won her first Olympic medal in 1956 when she was only 16 years old. Then, at the 1960 Rome Olympics, she won three gold medals.

Wilma overcame many challenges to become the fastest woman alive. But her victory was important for other reasons too. Wilma didn't use her fame to bacome rich or powerful. She used it to help others, especially those who are poor and disadvantaged.
