The entire Battle of Blackwater was astonishing, but the best part was how it began. Tyrion’s tactical plan to use a ship filled with wildfire as a decoy to blow up Stannis Baratheon’s ships was genius, as were the stunning special effects as we got to witness a glorious green explosion.
The very first scene of the show was about the White Walkers, and then we got very little on these mystical creatures for the next two seasons. But all of that changed in a big way at the very end of the season 2 finale when three horns sounded and the undead slowly began coming out of the cold, led by an insanely creepy White Walker with piercing blue eyes. It was the same kind of stunning visual effects that the show ended season 1 with when we first saw the baby dragons.
Sure, we saw those cute baby dragons at the end of the first season, but we didn’t truly get a sense of how magical and mystical this show could be until Melisadnre showed up and gave birth to a Shadow Monster (which may or may not be related to Lost’s Smoke Monster). It was creepy and weird, but utterly astonishing.
Obviously we love Joffrey getting slapped, so the fact that it happened twice this season demanded two prominent places for it. This one was even better than the first one because it was Tyrion and it came during the fantastic King’s Landing riot.
Sadistic King Joffrey has always needed a good slap, so we cheered when his mother gave it to him in the season 2 premiere when Joffrey started to learn that he was the product of incest.
Oh Joe Dempsie, let us count the ways we fell in love with your wonderful Gendry this season. Just by virtue of hanging out with Arya his stock rose in our eyes, but when he showed off his impressive body while wielding a massive sword, it made us temporarily forget about how much we love Jon Snow, which isn’t an easy thing to do.
We’ve known all along that Tyrion is the best character on this show. But others seemed to realize it too when Joffrey fled the battle and the Hand was forced to deliver an inspirational speech and lead his men into battle. He did, and he received a brutal scar for his troubles, but at least, for a short while, everyone cheered for the “Half Man."
We didn’t get to see the baby dragons nearly as much as we would’ve liked, but this short moment of Daenerys teaching her babies to breathe fire on cubes of meat so they could cook their own food was absolutely adorable (and it was a great set up for the season finale). Much like Veruca Salt, it made us scream, “But daddy, we want a Baby Dragon now!"
Jon Snow is so deadly serious that we find it absolutely hysterical when he gets involved in a somewhat comical scenario. Such a moment came to pass when he spent the night snuggled up with his prisoner, the wilding Ygritte, to keep warm. Only his core body temperature wasn’t the only thing rising, if you get our drift.
Visually, I’m not sure anything was as beautiful as seeing Daenerys wander into the hall of the Iron Throne in her magical dream. The roof was destroyed, it was snowing and Daenerys almost achieved her goal of regaining the Iron Throne. Not only did it look stunning (like the set of her own music video), but it was wonderful to see Danaerys on the same set that other characters use because it connected her to the rest of the show, even if it was just a dream.
Arya Stark has a habit of befriending incredibly awesome characters (Syrio Forel, Gendry) so it’s no surprise that this prisoner was great. For saving his life and the lives of two others, Jaqen promised Arya that he would kill any three people she asked. His transformation from caged mystery man to Genie of Death was magnificent.
We knew Yoren was a good guy when he forced Arya to look away as her father was beheaded. And on his last night before getting killed, he told Arya about his childhood and how he got his revenge by repeating the names of the people he wanted to kill over and over again before going to sleep. Watching Arya do this a short time later was truly bad-ass.
In the most disturbing scene of the season, Joffrey forced two prostitutes to brutalize each other for his amusement, aiming a crossbow at them while they did it. Yes, we’ve hated Joffrey ever since he got Sansa’s direwolf and Arya’s butcher boy friend killed with his lies, but this was the moment where he went from just an annoying kid into a truly unredeemable human being.
Ned Stark lost his head because he has terrible at playing the game of thrones, but Tyrion is infinitely better. In our favorite scene of his master manipulations, he told Pycelle, Varys and Littlefinger about his plans to marry of Myrcella, only he told them three different tales to find out which one was feeding information to Cersei. It was brilliant in its simplicity and it worked like a charm.
Robb Stark can be kind of a stick in the mud, sometimes. He never seems to have any fun. So it was nice to see the King in the North let his hair down and get busy with Talisa, the enemy nurse.
The disfigured Hound looked and sounded like a bad guy for the first one and a half seasons. But then he saved Sansa from her attempted rapists, and in his greatest moment, he walked away from the Battle of Blackwater because of his intense fear of fire. Sure, it be kind of cowardly, but when he told off Joffrey by saying “F--- the King," we couldn’t help but cheer his defection.
We were promised that the baby dragons would develop into giant warriors, and while they didn’t seem to grow in size at all during season 2, they did grow in strength. With Daenerys in chains, she simply had to say “Dracarys" to command her babies to breathe massive flames of fire to destroy her enemy. I can’t wait to see what happens when they’re bigger and start flying.
Tyrion’s lover has turned into a remarkably capable character, one who’s history is a mystery but who can clearly take care of herself. When another handmaiden was about to spill the beans about Sansa’s first period, Shae tracked her down, held a knife to her throat and threatened her if she told anyone. Clearly Tyrion has great taste in women.
Tyrion and Bronn’s unlikely friendship is often a comedic highlight of any episode. But things took a dark turn when Bronn was promoted to Commander of the City Watch. This chilling exchange was one of our favorite bits of dialogue all season.
Tyrion: “If I told you to murder an infant girl, say still at her mother’s breast, would you do it without question?"
Bronn: “Without question? No. I’d ask how much."
While trapped in the House of the Undying, Daenerys was locked in a surreal hallucination, and who didn’t cheer when she entered a tent to find her dead husband, Khal Drogo, back to once again deliver his trademark bravao.
Arya might look small and weak, but she’s a tough, smart cookie. Her strategic mind was highlighted when she made her third death wish to Jaqen and ordered him to kill himself. Knowing he was sworn to do as she asked, she leveraged this into getting him to help her and her friends escape Harrenhal. Her ability to find an advantageous loophole in any situation is one of the many reasons we love her.
There was something so absurdly funny about the scene where Daenerys met the Thirteen of Qarth (the greatest city that ever was or will be). The Spice King was so whimsically droll, and watching Daenerys threaten him with her usual overwrought speechifying was an amazing study in contrast.
A cute little scene, Arya trusted Gendry enough to let him know her father was Ned Stark, and the way he playfully handled it, calling her “m’lady" in a mocking tone, made us fall in love with these two all over agan.
If there was one defining moment for Margaery Tyrell, the would-be queen, it was when she attempted to consummate her marriage to Renly Baratheon, but revealed that she knew all about his homosexuality relationship with her brother and even suggesting bringing him in as an opening act to get Renly ready to give her some little princes and princesses. That complete lack of judgment and analytical approach to marriage and royal matters showed us just how clever and determined she is.
A delightfully disturbing moment, Joffrey whipped out his massive sword, Hearteater, and ordered his queen-to-be Sansa to kiss it, promising that she could lick off the blood when he returned.
There aren’t many laugh-out-loud moments on this show, but this was one of them. In the season finale, Theon Greyjoy delivered a rousing speech to his men as he prepared to lead them into certain defeat, battling Robb Stark’s army. Just as he hit his crescendo, one of his own men hit him in the back of the head, knocking him out because they didn’t actually want to fight. It was so incredibly pathetic that you can’t help but feel a little sorry for the murderous Theon.
We love the increased use of magic in season 2, and seeing this member of the Thirteen seemingly replicate himself was confusing and amazing, all at the same time.
During the Battle of Blackwater Cersei Lannister got drunk and awesome. We’re still not sure if the fact that she was going to poison and kill her youngest son, Tommen, was a good thing or bad thing. Yes, killing your kids is bad, but after hearing about the awful things the Lannisters did to the Targaryan children, can you blame her?
A tender, quiet moment among the shocking upheavals in the season finale, Robb ran away with his new gal, Talisa, and married her. It was a nice, intimate ceremony, but it still remains to be seen exactly who she is.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I kind of like Lancel Lannister, the sniveling, groveling loser who took over Jaime’s “duties" with Cersei after he was captured. The moment that made me really like him was when Tyrion blackmailed him to spy for him by threatening to reveal his incestuous relationship with Cersei to Joffrey. Seeing Lancel fall to his knees as he whined and begged for mercy was comic genius.
The strangest costume ever certainly belonged to this mysterious woman of Qarth whose entire face was covered by a fractal mask. What’s she hiding?
One of the more surprising moments of the finale came when Arya’s Genie of Death revealed that he truly is magical by completely changing his face. A side comment about Arya’s old dancing teacher Syrio Forel also made it seem as though he and Jaqen were the same person.
Jaime Lannister: Bad Prisoner
After appearing briefly as Robb Stark’s prisoner in the season 2 premiere, Jaime Lannister disappeared for five whole episodes before he finally popped up again. Luckily when he did he was funnier and more charming than ever before, telling his cousin all about how he might be the Kingslayer, but he’s not a very good prisoner. The prison break that followed showed just how resourceful he can be.
I love it when the show knocks Theon down a peg or two. So it was hilarious when he felt up a woman who offered him some help and boasted about how important he was, only to learn the girl in question was his sister. On the bright side, it makes your awkward Thanksgivings seem downright normal.
Brienne hasn’t had much to do, but she’s done it well. Her introduction was brilliant as she defeated the much-lauded Loras Tyrell in combat and demanded she become the first female member of Renly’s Kingsguard. She was kind of like the Rosa Parks of knights, only it didn’t end that well since Renly was killed a short while later.
These two men are arguably the smartest ones on the entire show, and seeing them interact all season was fantastic. I could watch these two talk for an entire hour, but their best chat came when they talked about the titular game of thrones, and how Tyrion is well-suited to play it. Sometimes you might forget why the show has the word “Game" in the title, but conversations like this one remind you. ??
