China has rejected?comments by Japanese officials?on the United Nation’s acknowledgement of Okinotori Reef as an island.

Okinotori is the southernmost coral reef in Japan. Today the country claims it’s an island. This would entitle?Tokyo to a strategically-important exclusive economic zone around Okinotori.

But the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf has delayed the review on Japan’s proposal. China points out that UN Convention says a rock which cannot sustain human habitation or economic life shall not be identified as an island.
