After the service concludes, my friend and I drink tea. The teahouse is modern, filled with youthful energy, and beside us, a snappy waitress with a slash of pink in her hair holds a digital pad. Modern art hangs on the walls, paintings of splashed color and strangely twisted lines. My friend and I discuss the latest imported foods at the local department store. And he explains to me the differences in the teas available, as my lack of knowledge in this area is staggering.

After so many months of living here, it has become hard at times for me to distinguish between what is Chinese and what is not. But the differences are there. They are in the shadows between buildings as well as in the lines on the faces of the old men who sit on park benches and talk about what has been. And they are in the faces of the young as they look to?the future. At home, I have finally discovered how to input Chinese characters on my computer. This keeps me enthralled for many hours, while the dust storm passes by.
