"The real emerald of Ireland"
Writer Oscar Wilde once called Connemara - the district an hour west of Galway - a "savage beauty." He had good reason since Connemara's scenery is considered some of the most breathtaking in the world. Rolling green hills give way to the dramatic Connemara Mountains. Desolate stretches of windswept coastline lead up to rugged cliffs that overlook the Atlantic Ocean.
Within Connemara's quaint little village of Oughterard is the Ireland of the postcards. Oughterard's brightly colored storefronts and thatch-roofed cottages are perfect examples of an Irish village. Alongside the village lies the Irish Republic's largest lake, Lough Corrib, known to fishermen around the world for trout and salmon.

Kylemore Abbey
A trip to Connemara is not complete without a visit to Kylemore Abbey, a spectacular gothic castle. Originally called Kylemore Castle, it was constructed between 1867 and 1871 for a London businessman.
In 1920, a group of Belgian nuns bought the castle and later established a boarding school for girls. Today, nuns still operate the abbey and allow tours of the grounds and parts of the castle.
