在撰寫《曾經(jīng)》的劇本過程中，導演約翰·卡尼融入了很多自己的親身經(jīng)歷和人生感受，片中關于男主角與前女友分居都柏林、倫敦兩地的情節(jié)，正是卡尼自己一段戀愛經(jīng)歷的寫照，而影片中在男孩回憶女友的閃回片段中，演員也正是卡尼現(xiàn)實生活中的女友。在編寫劇本時，男主角漢薩德也曾為卡尼出謀劃策，故事凝聚了兩位都柏林音樂人長達十年的城市記憶。在拍攝過程中，卡尼也以盡可能展現(xiàn)都柏林真實風貌為主旨，如在開場的全景展觀長鏡頭，便是在街頭拍攝的，大多數(shù)路人都不知道自己的一舉一動被卡尼盡收在攝像像機里。

由于影片講的就是發(fā)生在創(chuàng)作型樂人身上的故事，片中歌曲大部分皆由男主角格倫·漢薩德親自創(chuàng)作演唱，更彰顯了其身為唱作音樂人的優(yōu)勢。漢薩德為電影的配樂能力勿庸置疑，其之前的名曲《Your Face》就曾被《魔法灰姑娘》等電影收為配樂，這次給足創(chuàng)作空間，漢薩德更是大過樂癮，為影片親手譜寫了九支配樂，并在片中真人演唱了十首之多，真正做到唱演兩不誤。

眾所周知，愛爾蘭是個現(xiàn)代音樂圣殿，這里不僅有U2、The Cranberries這樣激烈高亢的搖滾時尚，也有像The Frames這樣淺吟低唱的優(yōu)雅民謠，通過此片、漢薩德以及他的The Frames樂隊，全世界更多影迷和樂迷欣賞到愛爾蘭獨立流行樂和民謠的非凡魅力，電影與音樂的相互激發(fā)力，在《曾經(jīng)》身上最大程度的體現(xiàn)出來，因而不僅電影情節(jié)本身耐人尋味，原聲大碟也極具收藏價值。也正是通過本片的合作，男主角漢薩德與女主角埃爾格羅瓦天衣無縫的演唱配合才得以被世人欣賞到，于是兩人趁熱打鐵，在2006年出了一張名為《The Swell Season》的新專輯，將影片內的創(chuàng)作故事延伸到了銀幕外，兩人在幕后也承認已發(fā)展為情侶關系。?
