The motel, or motor inn, is the latest kind of place in which people who are away from home can stay. In the past, travellers found protection from the chill of the night by staying at a highway pub or inn. Travelling by coach or horseback, they needed places to eat or sleep for themselves and their horses. These pubs were scattered along principal roads between cities. When the motor car became more than eccentricity, other types or accommodations developed in the United States. The first motel was called Askin's Cottage Camp. Later it was known as Askin's Auto Camp, and motel is still in operation there. Aside from the changes in name, there have been even more fundamental changes. When the first roadside auto camp opened, travellers brought with them everything but the bed — even their own sheets and bedding.
