On October 5, 1970 - Sadat becomes leader of Egypt.
Anwar Sadat [-----1-----] on October 5th, 1970, replacing the [-----2-----] Gamal Abdel Nasser as President of Egypt. Within months, he had rallied the Egyptian [-----3-----] behind him. Soviet and Egyptian ties, strong at the inauguration of the Aswan High Dam in 1971, weakened as Sadat gained military strength. The Egyptian crossing of the Suez Canal in 1973, [-----4-----]. Economic difficulties later [-----5-----] Sadat into an historic peace settlement with Israel. Though one of the most revered leaders of his time, Sadat was assassinated in 1981.
