Iceland's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, has started erupting, accompanied by a series of small earthquakes. Amateur video filmed by a passenger on a commercial airlines flight showed what appeared to be an ash cloud of about 20 kilometers rising into the sky.
The volcano lies under the uninhabited Batnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland and last erupted in 2004. Officials say the eruption is not expected to affect European airline traffic at least for the next 24 hours although a flight ban has been imposed around the area. Whether widespread disruption occurs will depend on how long the eruption lasts, how high the ash plume rises and which way the wind blows.
The eruption last year caused most airports in northern European countries to close for five days. Authorities halted flights due to fears that dust and ash would get intoaircraft engines and cause accidents after the cloud was blown into European air traffic lanes.
