China and the US have signed a new agreement on extending the stay of two giant pandas in Washington. The agreement is welcome news for American fans of China's furry ambassadors.
The giant pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, will remain at the National Zoo in Washington DC for five more years. First arriving at the zoo in December of 2000, the pair produced a cub named Taishan five years later. Americans have fallen in love with Taishan and his return to China was postponed twice. He finally arrived on Chinese soil in February of 2010. Experts say the agreement covering Mei Xiang and Tian Tian also includes a joint study to see if the pair can breed again.
Dennis Kelly, Director of Smithsonian National Zoo said "Pandas continue to be a symbol of cooperation for both America and China, a symbol of friendship between the people, most importantly a symbol of conservation. Saving the giant panda is a great success story of China. It's a great example of how two peoples can work together."
