With the increasing numbers of smartphones and Chinese internet users, micro blogging, known as Weibo in Chinese, has seen a surge.
Popular websites have created their own Weibo sites, which allow users to post messages of up to 140 words, along with images and videos. The online phenomenon is helping people stay in touch and relay information in real time.

In 2010, internet giants sohu, tencent, netease also successively launched their own weibo sites. By the end of Oct 2010, only sina’s weibo site registered more than 50 million users. The numbers are exploding, with an average of 40 people opening a Weibo site every second.
Cao Zenghui, Deputy General Manager, Weibo Division of , said, "Weibo developed very fast in China, now the crowd, who uses weibo, basically includes the young, students, and white-collar workers from different fields. Weibo allows people to quickly post messages using their mobile phones, to stay in touch with friends, and provides channels for different people to communicate."
For ordinary people, it's a great way to keep in touch with their circle of friends in real time, expressing thoughts as they occur. It has been crucial to maintaining interpersonal relationships.
Wang Peng, Weibo Blooger, said, "I have used weibo for a long time. Through weibo it allows the ordinary person to understand more about the daily lives of celebrities. Besides, we can also interact with friends, for example, there are many middle school and university classmates on my blog."
As the social influence of Weibo continues to expand, more and more news agencies and government departments are beginning to release information through weibo sites. By Aug 2010, there were 466 mainstream news agencies and 41 government departments that used sina weibo. The local government in Tao Yuan county in Hunan province, was the first to open a weibo site in Nov 2, 2009. As more and more agencies and official departments choose weibo to release information to the masses, the influence and credibitily of micro blogging in China grows along with it.
