《賽車總動員3：極速挑戰(zhàn)》主要講述了一代傳奇賽車閃電麥昆通過背水一戰(zhàn)，努力重返巔峰并由此領悟“車生”真諦的故事。閃電麥坤走到了賽車生涯的十字路口，他剛剛在與一位年輕選手黑風暴杰克遜的較量后失去了冠軍頭銜。在被風暴打敗后，麥坤打算在訓練最后一個賽季后就退休。他的合作伙伴是頂尖訓練基地的老板斯特林，和他的王牌教練科魯茲拉米雷斯。然而，斯特林之所以對他感興趣，不是想讓其復出，而是希望他退休，以便能在產品中獲得授權使用閃電麥坤的形象。麥坤拒絕退出，跟斯特林定下協(xié)議，如果他能贏得本賽季的第一場比賽，他便可以等到自己想要時再退休，但如果他沒有取勝，就必須立即退休。
