On October 20, 1944, MacArthur returns to the Phillipines.

In 1930, at the age of 50, General Douglas MacArthur became the U.S. Army's youngest chief of staff. Years later, his heroic defense of the Phillipines brought him international recognition. Undaunted by retreat after desperate battles to hold first Batan and then the island of Corregidor, he promised the people, "I will return." And on October 20, 1944, advancing island by island, MacArthur waded ashore on the Philippine beaches. Relieved by President Truman over differences in strategic policy during the Korean conflict, MacArthur nevertheless came home to a tumultuous welcome from coast to coast - an American hero.
