Professor McGonagall shot a sharp look at Dumbledore and said "The owls are nothing next to the rumors that are flying around. You know what they're saying? About why he's disappeared? About what finally stopped him?"

It seemed that Professor McGonagall had reached the point she was most anxious to discuss, the real reason she had been waiting on a cold, hard wall all day, for neither as a cat nor as a woman had she fixed Dumbledore with such a piercing stare as she did now. It was plain that whatever "everyone" was saying, she was not going to believe it until Dumbledore told her it was true. Dumbledore, however, was choosing another lemon drop and did not answer.

"What they're saying,” she pressed on, "is that last night Voldemort turned up in Godric's Hollow. He went to find the Potters. The rumor is that Lily and James Potter are — are — that they're — dead."

Dumbledore bowed his head. Professor McGonagall gasped.

"Lily and James… I can't believe it… I didn't want to believe it… Oh, Albus…"

Dumbledore reached out and patted her on the shoulder. "I know… I know…" he said heavily.

Professor McGonagall's voice trembled as she went on. "That's not all. They're saying he tried to kill the Potter's son, Harry. But he couldn't. He couldn't kill that little boy. No one knows why, or how, but they're saying that when he couldn't kill Harry Potter, Voldemort's power somehow broke — and that's why he's gone."?Dumbledore nodded glumly.

1.? rumors that are flying around：

單獨(dú)把這個(gè)短語拿出來說，純粹是小編自己覺得這樣的表達(dá)比較形象而已。
我們?nèi)绻氡磉_(dá)“很多流言流傳著”這么一個(gè)意思的話，可能很多同學(xué)會(huì)用there be的句型吧。
但是用文中這種形式的說法，不僅會(huì)讓人覺得很地道，而且動(dòng)詞的恰當(dāng)使用也會(huì)讓人感覺意思表達(dá)得活靈活現(xiàn)。
比如當(dāng)我們要說“I was frightened”的時(shí)候，或許可以換一下，說成“Fear grasped me”也未嘗不可哦。

2.? reach the point：

同樣的意思還可以說成get to the point，也就是“談到問題要點(diǎn)”的意思。比如說：
Let's stop discussing trivial details and get to the point.（咱們別再探索隨細(xì)節(jié)了，說正事兒吧。）

3. It is plain that:

這其實(shí)就是It is clear that的意思。plain在這里表示：“清楚的，明白的，易懂的”，比如說：
He made it plain that he did not wish to continue.（他向我們明白表示他不想繼續(xù)下去。）
plain這個(gè)詞有很多意思，除了我們知道的例如“樸素的，平凡的”之類的意思外，它還可以表示“不漂亮的，不好看的”。
因此，當(dāng)別人說“She is a rather plain woman”的時(shí)候，其實(shí)只是在用“相貌平平”來婉轉(zhuǎn)地表示“她不漂亮”而已。

4. press on:

press on表示的是“加緊，奮力前進(jìn)”的意思。比如說：
Let us press on with our work, even if it is dull and weary.（盡管這項(xiàng)工作枯燥乏味，我們還是干下去吧。）
在文中，可能我們就得意譯一下了，根據(jù)上下文語境，將其翻譯為“緊接著說”或許更容易理解吧。
