Leslie Cheung, who has died aged 46, enjoyed a double life as one of Hong Kong's most popular entertainers in two different fields: pop music and, latterly, films.

Throughout his screen career often played sexually ambiguous characters. His best known role was in Farewell, My Concubine (1993), as a closet homosexual in a Peking Opera troupe who specialised in female roles and was drawn to his longtime heterosexual friend.
張國榮在其熒屏生涯中常扮演性別模糊的角色，他最為知名的是《霸王別姬》（1993年）中北京京劇團里未公開同性戀身份的一角，精于女性角色、長久以來為其異性戀朋友深深吸引。

His death, on April 1, by plunging from the 24th floor of Hong Kong's prestigious Mandarin Oriental hotel, was at first thought by fans to be an April Fool's joke. Ironically, his fate mirrored the climax of his last film, Inner Senses, in which he was tempted by the ghost of an ex-girlfriend to jump to his death.
