A: You are listening to "Listeners Garden" here on CRI. I'm LPC.
B: And I'm JS. The exciting World Cup competitions are offering a sumptuous feast for football fans all over the world. Since this is the first time the World Cup is being held in Africa, the African community here in China is extremely excited about the event. African expats in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai have been organizing various kinds of activities to celebrate the event and showcase their passion for football.
A: In the past two decades, more Africans have come to study and work in China. With the growth of the African population and Sino-African cultural exchanges, African culture has become increasingly popular among the Chinese.
B: Fascinated with African music, many urban Chinese have become interested in learning to play the African drum. A group of African drum lovers meet every weekend in Beijing's Houhai bar area to practice their skills.
A: The group of drummers is led by a young man named Liu Yong. In 2008, he opened a shop in Beijing to sell African drums and began to give free lessons to people interested in learning to play the exotic instrument. Within two years, the number of Liu's students has grown from a dozen in the beginning to several hundred today.
B: The Chinese have started to appreciate African art more in recent years. Shops selling African artwork and costumes can be found in many Chinese cities. Africa-themed paintings and aboriginal craftwork, including face masks, wood carvings, stone sculptures and bone ornaments, are very popular with Chinese customers.
A: In the eyes of most Chinese, Africa is a magical and mysterious land boasting breathtaking landscapes, fascinating cultures, colorful folk arts, dynamic music and vigorous dancing. These have attracted many Chinese travelers to the African continent. Luo Hong, President of Holiland, China's largest bakery chain, is a fan of Africa.
B: The 43-year-old is both a successful entrepreneur and a famous photographer. He visited South Africa in 2001 and was greatly fascinated with the grand view of nature there.
A: Since then, Luo has traveled widely in Africa and captured as many beautiful scenes as possible with his camera lens. Some of his photos on African scenery have been posted in Beijing's subway stations.
B: Luo Hong showcases the beauty of Africa to the Chinese people with his photos, while Chinese artist Wan Jiyuan presents a vivid portrayal of African life and culture in his oil paintings. The artist has visited Africa many times and developed a strong African complex. His paintings on the theme of Africa have attracted lots of visitors.
A: Since the inception of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in 2000, China has been intensifying its cultural exchanges and cooperation with African countries. In late May, a cultural event called "African Culture in Focus" kicked off in China to highlight Sino-African cultural exchanges and further promote African culture among the Chinese.
B: This year's event is the second of its kind in China. It's an extension of the one in 2008 and aims to give the Chinese a deeper understanding of Africa.
A: Compared with the event in 2008, which was held in only one city for 10 days, this year's event will travel around China for six months until November.
B: A wide range of activities will be held to bring the distinctive and vibrant African culture face-to-face with the Chinese.
A: This year's event is also collaborating with the ongoing Shanghai World Expo. Some visiting African art troupes have been invited to perform at the Expo Park.
B: China and Africa have long enjoyed a close friendship. We believe that cultural communication and cooperation between the two sides will be constantly enhanced in the years to come, and the diversity of African culture will be better illustrated for the Chinese people.
