This Day in History - March 26th, Starring - Jonas Salk

March 26, 1953 - Dr. Jonas Salk, of the University of Pittsburgh, reports in The Journal of American Medical Association that he has successfully tested a vaccine against polio, in 90 adults and children. The Salk vaccine was formally certified to prevent infantile paralysis within months of Salk's ground-breaking report. A massive child inoculation program was quickly begun in schools throughout the United States. The Salk vaccine employed killed viruses of the same kind that caused the crippling disease that had afflicted millions, including former President Franklin Roosevelt. Several years later, an oral vaccine, far more?palatable to children, was developed by Dr. Albert Sabin. ?
