Victory within reach, President Barack Obama set his sights on rallying House Democrats Saturday for a final health care push for Sunday’s vote. He calls the bill the single most important step his government has taken on health care since Medicare.

In an unprecedented letter, Pope Benedict is condemning Irish bishops for “grave errors of judgement” in handling clerical sex abuse cases, dating from the 1930s to the 1990s. He’s also ordered a Vatican investigation but he laid no blame for the problem on the Vatican’s policies of keeping such cases secret.

The National Weather Service has lowered the projected crest of the Red River in Fargo, North Dakota, yet another half-foot. Officials in Fargo say they are in good shape for the crest.

10th-seeded Saint Mary’s was considered a long short to make it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. It seems fitting that a long shot should help the Gaels reach that destination. Saint Mary’s won 75-68 over second-seeded Villanova.
