In Foshan City of South China's Guangdong Province, sixty-eight couples decided to tie the knot in grand traditional fashion. The mass wedding last Sunday was done in Han Dynasty style.

To witness the event, you'd think you had traversed back in time some 1,800 years, that is if you ignore the cameras of course.

Not only visually distinct, a Han Dynasty wedding is markedly different in tone from contemporary ones. The wedding emphasizes the solemnity of the event and is less about having a good time than it is about authentically following procedure.

Some examples of the strict customs include sitting face-to-face with each other, exchanging three bows, eating the exact same food and drinking "wedlock" wine.

According to the protocol director, a rope is attached to the wedding wine cups that represents the bound "heart and soul" of the newlyweds.

Protocol director said, "At the wedding ceremony, there is a thin rope connecting the couples, meaning 'heart and soul' between them. The thin rope stands for sharing happiness and woe between the couples."

Bride said, "A wedding ceremony of this kind is great fun."

The Han Dynasty-style wedding is testament to a new curiosity for traditional Chinese culture in a time of meteoric change. There are now Han culture clubs throughout China. Members avidly wear old style costumes and play traditional musical instruments.
