Chapter 4. ?Loneliness
?
№.1
- When the sheep tired of standing in the rain, they walked slowly up the lane and into the fold.
【短語筆記】be tired of - 厭煩,對……
【例】It never be tired of solving my puzzles.(它從不疲倦地解決我的問題。)
【舉一反三】近義短語 - be tired with / get tired of
?
1) You may be tired with reading, but you should not be tired of it.(看書可能使你疲勞,但不應(yīng)該對看書感到厭煩。)
2) But I suspect that a man who is not satisfied with one moon will also get tired of a dozen moons.(可是我相信 一個人如果對一個月亮感不到滿足,對十二個月亮也會感到厭倦。)
?
№.2 - Talking with Templeton was not the most interesting occupation in the world but it was better than nothing.
【短語筆記】be better than nothing - 比沒有……要好
【例】Something is better than nothing.(聊勝于無。)
Has anything interesting happened?
We can’t believe anything he says.
I asked if anything was the matter.
I want something to eat, and anything will do.
I am tired of his constant complaints.(他經(jīng)常性的抱怨令我厭煩。)
?
Anything is better than nothing, isn’t it?
Nothing can prevent me from going.
誤:Anything cannot prevent me from going.
?
Did you hear anything interesting there?
He’s anything but a hero.
John is anything but (=far from) a good loser.
Your answer is anything but perfect.
If anything, this coat is more expensive than that one.
He seems to have little, if anything, to do with this.
?
№.3 - He knew Templeton was getting soaked, out there in the pouring rain, but even that didn't comfort him. Friendless, dejected, and hungry, he threw himself down in the manure and sobbed.
A bicycle cape will protect you in wet weather.(自行車雨披可以使你在雨天騎車也不致淋濕。)
【舉一反三】be soaked to the skin (=be soaked through) - 渾身濕透
?
№.4 - Darkness settled over everything.
An air of sadness settled over the group.(悲傷的氣氛籠罩了整個團(tuán)隊。)
Darkness settled over the fields. Dust settled in the road.
