defend, protect, safeguard, guard, shield, shelter, harbour

這些動詞均有“保護、保衛(wèi)”之意。

defend : 普通用詞，指用武力或其它措施使人或物不受損害，消除危險。用作比喻時，指堅持某種行動、決定或意見。

The American navy would defend and patrol the Western Hemisphere.（美國海軍將防御和巡邏西半球。）

protect : 普通用詞，指用某種手段作為防御工具以防危險或傷害。

The troops were there to protect the townspeople.（部隊駐扎在那里以保護市民。）

safeguard : 語氣強，指采取積極措施預(yù)防可能發(fā)生的一切攻擊或危險。

Their political rights must be safeguarded.（他們的政治利益必須得到保證。）

guard : 普通用詞，指保持警惕以防可能的攻擊或傷害。

The soldiers guarded the prince whenever he left the palace.（每當(dāng)王子離開皇宮, 士兵們都要保護他。）

shield : 語氣比protect強，但側(cè)重防止迫在眉睫的攻擊或傷害。

It occurred to me that perhaps he was trying to shield someone.（在我看來，可能他在試圖保護某個人。）

shelter : 通常指尋找安全地方躲避風(fēng)雨或使人免遭危害。

He sheltered himself behind a hedge.（他躲在樹籬后面。）

harbour : 貶義詞，指隱匿或非法保護、窩藏。

It's an offence to harbour the criminals.（窩藏罪犯是犯罪行為。）
