I spent last week in Brighton interpreting during a training course on waste management. When you're interpreting, you need to make very quick choices to make sure the message is communicated efficiently between all the different participants, so when the debate turned to nimbyism (from NIMBY, Not In My Backyard, which describes opposition by residents to a proposal for a new development close to them), I chose to paraphrase instead of using the English acronym.
上周我在布萊頓為一場(chǎng)關(guān)于污染治理問(wèn)題的會(huì)議做口譯。大會(huì)口譯的時(shí)候最重要的是在極短的時(shí)間內(nèi)斟酌詞語(yǔ)，好讓與會(huì)者都明白發(fā)言人的意思。所以當(dāng)發(fā)言者說(shuō)到nimbyism（由NIMBY而來(lái)，Not In My Backyard的縮寫(xiě)，是對(duì)在自己家附近建設(shè)垃圾處理場(chǎng)表示抗議的宣傳語(yǔ)）時(shí)，我避開(kāi)了英文縮寫(xiě)詞，而是解釋了它的具體含義。

Waste management facilities are rarely welcome and clearly stimulate the imagination of people fighting them: try and see if you can work out what these acronyms mean.
沒(méi)人喜歡看到垃圾處理設(shè)備或者場(chǎng)地就在自家門(mén)口，所以針對(duì)此人們創(chuàng)造出了不少有意思的口號(hào)和縮寫(xiě)：

NOPE: 請(qǐng)回火星

NIABY - Not In Anyone's Backyard
NIABY：每家的后院都是神圣不可侵犯的！

BANANA - Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything
BANANA：建一個(gè)拆一個(gè)，拆光為止

NIMEY - Not In My Election Year
NIMEY：選舉時(shí)節(jié)，保證和諧

NIMFOS - Not In My Field Of Sight
NIMFOS：色即是空空即是色，不要讓我看到不要讓我看到我要清凈……

NIMTOO - Not in My Term of Office
NIMTOO：本官在此，哪個(gè)敢放肆？

PITBY- Put It in Their Back Yard
PITBY：要死大家一起死

CALF - Citizens Against Landfill
CALF：統(tǒng)一戰(zhàn)線，抵制垃圾場(chǎng)

PEST - Prevent Environmental Suicide Today
PEST：珍愛(ài)生命，拯救環(huán)境
